Charleroi Regional police are conducting an internal investigation on one of their part-time officers after his girlfriend was allegedly found with drug paraphernalia in his car Wednesday night.

Officer Steven Kenyon was not inside the car when another Charleroi patrolman pulled behind the vehicle while it was parked in the 500 block of Fallowfield Avenue and arrested the two women inside.

But Charleroi Mayor Nancy Ellis said the borough has taken Kenyon off the schedule as it investigates the issue and why his girlfriend and the other woman allegedly had syringe caps and other paraphernalia in his car.

She requested the internal investigation Thursday after learning about the incident the previous day.

“I have called for a complete and thorough investigation into the situation,” Ellis said. “I did that based on the fact that I want to assure the citizens there would be a complete investigation to uphold the integrity of the regional police and the integrity of our officers. Whatever road it takes us, that will be the road we’ll go down.”

Police said in a criminal complaint supporting the charges that they noticed two women in the car acting suspiciously in the parked car shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday. The officer said Kenyon’s girlfriend, Jennifer Crabb, 26, of 120 First Ave., New Eagle, and an acquaintance, Sheila Urwin, 52, of 1113 Route 837, Monongahela, appeared to try to hide something.

The two women admitted to shooting heroin, according to the complaint, and Crabb told investigators she had swallowed two empty stamp bags. The officer said he found two syringe caps in the car and a syringe on the street near the vehicle. Police said they also found suspected morphine pills in Urwin’s possession.

Both were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, while Urwin also faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
