WEST HOMESTEAD (AP) – The missing link in bicycle trail connecting the Pittsburgh area to Washington, D.C., has quietly opened, though it still won’t be formally dedicated until a June 15 ceremony.
Ground was broken in October on the final mile of the Great Allegheny Passage, a 141-mile bicycle trail from the Pittsburgh area to Cumberland, Md. That’s where the Great Allegheny Passage links up with the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, which stretches to Washington, D.C.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the final link of the trail, near Sandcastle Waterpark just east of the city, opened Friday.
The June event will include a ribbon-cutting, also near Sandcastle, to be followed by a bicycle ride to Pittsburgh’s Point State Park, where a party will celebrate the trail’s completion.
