Burgettstown School Board members approved a 2013-14 budget of $18,022,932 that would include a tax increase of 2 mills.

The budget was approved at the the board’s meeting last week, and the final budget will be adopted at the June meeting. If the proposed budget stays as is, it would mean a yearly increase in spending of $526,574, or roughly 3 percent.

The budget was approved unanimously with board member Harry Sabatasse absent.

The tax increase would raise the millage rate to 119. Last year, the median home assessment in the district was $5,251. This means the median home owner would pay $625 in school taxes, an increase of $10.50, under the proposed budget.

Unlike last year, the school district will not benefit from a bonus payment of $256,590. The February 2012 payment was part of a five-year lease agreement between the district and Range Resources for rights to 79 acres of district property on Bavington Road.

Although the district will continue to earn royalties from the site, business manager Jamie O’Donnell said those payments weren’t factored into the budget because they were subject to unpredictable gas prices and production schedules.

The district also added two armed security officers at a salary of $35,000 each following the December shootings in an elementary school in Connecticut.
