The Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation recently awarded five scholarships to graduating seniors, one from each of the local school districts. The winners, who will each receive $2,000, all intend to pursue a career in health care.

The recipients are Jessica Black of West Greene High School; Jenna Bohach of Waynesburg Central High School; Ashley Faddis of Jefferson-Morgan High School; Sarah Ferrier of Mapletown High School; and Hillary Pratt of Carmichaels High School.

Black plans to pursue a degree in nursing at Waynesburg University; Bohach plans to pursue a degree in occupational therapy at West Liberty University; Faddis plans to pursue a degree in dentistry at Penn State University; Ferrier plans to pursue a degree in biology/pre-med at Bethany College; and Pratt plans to pursue a degree in biology/pre-med at Washington & Jefferson College.

This is the seventh consecutive year GCMHF has awarded health care scholarships to graduating seniors from Greene County. Combined with various nursing and medical student tuition assistance programs, GCMHF plans to award more than $50,000 this year to Greene County students pursuing medical degrees. Jay Hammers, GCMHF president, said, “We are thrilled to be able to provide this level of funding to area students and we look forward to their return and positive impact on the healthcare of our community.”

The GCMH Foundation is the largest nonprofit philanthropic organization based in Greene County, with assets exceeding $12 million. Its mission is to provide funding for health care related programs designed to benefit Greene County residents. In addition to funding various health care initiatives throughout the county, it also operates the Foundation for Wellness fitness facility on the first floor of the Southwest Regional Medical Center.

Typically, donations made to the foundation are tax deductible.
