Severe weather knocked out power in several areas of Washington County early Thursday night.

The hardest hit area was Canonsburg, where more than 1,520 customers were left without power after a limb from a fallen tree near Shop ‘n Save crashed onto a power line, snapping three cross members on three utility poles at about 5:30 p.m. as a West Penn Power crew tried to remove the limb.

The power outage caused traffic backups along Pike Street, prompting Mayor David Rhome to advise drivers to avoid Pike Street from Shop ‘n Save to Gas N’ Go.

The borough implemented its emergency plan, which included some traffic lights powered by generators, automatic stop signs at some intersections and police officers directing traffic at other intersections.

“The emergency plan worked very well and nobody was hurt, and that’s what we’re most concerned about,” said Rhome.

An additional 335 customers in Chartiers, Cecil North Strabane, Peters, Canton and Robinson townships also were left in the dark as a result of the brief storm.

Most of the service was restored to the areas by about 9 p.m.
