SCRANTON (AP) – Three people in northeastern Pennsylvania have escaped unharmed after a chunk of a bridge fell off and hit their sport-utility vehicle.
It happened Thursday night as Kristian Batts was heading to a cookout in Carbondale. She and two passengers were driving out of Scranton when a chunk of the Harrison Avenue bridge fell through the windshield of her 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, sending shards into the vehicle.
The Times-Tribune reports no one was hurt.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman James May says the 91-year-old bridge was examined Thursday night and found to be structurally sound. He says workers determined the 8-inch piece of concrete was part of a decorative facade. The bridge will remain open.
The bridge is set to be replaced by a 3-span steel-plate bridge in 2014.
