Fort Cherry Elementary Center in McDonald is one of 30 schools that will receive mini-grants to promote healthy living as part of a Pennsylvania Department of Health initiative announced Thursday.

“Thanks to a collaborative effort of forward-thinking adults, being selected for this grant will help Fort Cherry students become more physically fit and conscious of decisions for a healthier life,” said Fort Cherry Superintendent Robert Dinnen.

The health department awarded a total of $90,000 to schools throughout the state to use for walk-to-school and bike-share programs as well as hosting presentations by local celebrities to stress the importance of fitness. The grants were awarded as part of the state’s Safe Routes to School program.

Trisha Craig, Fort Cherry director of curriculum, said the $5,000 award would go toward professional development, technology and fitness programming such as “family fun night” in which students and their families could take part in games that promote health.
