Range Resources will reintroduce a proposal to shut down one water impoundment and expand another in Mt. Pleasant Township during a special meeting of the board ofsSupervisors 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the municipal building.
Supervisors rejected Range’s proposal in September to close the Carter impoundment, located off of Fort Cherry Road, and convert the Stewart impoundment, located on Caldwell Road and Route 50, into an above-ground holding facility.
Range spokesman Matt Pitzarella said since then, the company has met with township supervisors to answer questions and provide more details on the proposed expansions to Stewart impoundment. Pitzarella said that if Range’s proposal is approved Thursday, it would then need to apply for the conditional use application to expand Stewart impoundment. He said the actual construction of the facility could take at least two years, but removal of the Carter impoundment would be immediate. Pitzarella said both parties also discussed phasing out the Cowden and Clingerman impoundments, and as part of the proposal, the township would remove its pending notices of violation for the impoundments.
If no agreement is reached Thursday, Pitzarella said the parties go back to square one. “We’re hopeful that they agree that this is in the best interest of the township,” he said.
Township manager Mary Ann Stevenson did not return a call seeking comment and township solicitor Bill Johnson could not be reached for comment.
