A trail of diesel led East Bethlehem Township police to a Greene County man suspected of stealing the fuel from a rock quarry Monday morning.
Larry Roy Filby, 46, of 66 Circle St., Clarksville, was arrested Tuesday at his home after failing to honor requests by police Chief Mark Pompe to appear at the station to discuss the theft.
Pompe said Filby reportedly went to Mon River Aggregate, 175 Black Hollow Road, in his Ford F-150 pickup truck with a 500-gallon tank in the bed.
“He went to the quarry and put 300 gallons of diesel in the tank,” Pompe said. “But apparently a valve wasn’t closed properly because the diesel leaked. On every road he took, there is a trail of diesel that led quarry employees right to his home.”
Pompe said it is about 3 miles from the quarry to Filby’s home.
When Pompe along with the quarry employees approached Filby’s home, the Clarksville man jumped back in his truck and fled. They were able to follow him into Marianna before Filby reportedly turned onto a road that led to a wooded area.
Pompe said Filby denies stealing the fuel. The tank was removed from the back of the truck between Filby driving into the wooded area and when he was taken into custody Tuesday.
Filby was arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis on charges of theft, defiant trespass, criminal mischief, causing or risking a catastrophe and driving with a suspended license. He was placed in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 18 before Kanalis.
