A Waynesburg man wants residents to be aware of a new telephone scam.

Frank Farley said he has received 10 to 15 telephone calls during the last month in which the caller has told him he has won millions of dollars or a trip to Hawaii.

All the caller asks is that he go to a drug store or Walmart and purchase a pre-paid credit card for a specific amount and then provide the credit card number to him. Farley said the caller told him the card would be used to pay taxes on the prize.

Farley said he contacted state police about the calls, but they indicated they don’t investigate such matters. He said he also attempted to get hold of the Greene County district attorney’s office and the state attorney general’s office without success.

“They make it sound good,” Farley said of the offers. “I’m sure if I’m getting this many calls, a lot of other people are getting the calls, too, and maybe some are falling for it.”
