A conference on the latest research relating to shale gas extraction and its impact on public health, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Heinz History Center, 1212 Smallman St. in Pittsburgh’s Strip District.

Advance registration is required for the free event by calling 1-800-61-SHALE or by accessing the website http://shale.palwv.org, where an agenda and participating organizations are listed. Exhibits will be open from noon to 5 p.m. in the Mueller Hallway of the center. A closing reception is scheduled for 4:30 to 5 p.m.

The League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania began its study of shale issues in 2008, when the Indiana County chapter formed a Marcellus Shale study committee.

This event is part of an initiative funded by a Colcom Foundation grant to the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania citizen education fund.
