A Fallowfield Township man was ordered Tuesday to stand trial in Westmoreland County on accusations he murdered his stepfather-in-law, stabbing him nine times Aug. 7 after luring him to a roadside in Donegal.
District Judge Denise S. Theil ruled there was sufficient evidence at Michael Martin’s preliminary hearing to hold him for trial in the slaying of Earl F. Weygandt, 67, who shared his 3 Daily Road home with the suspect and other family members.
State police said evidence showed Martin, 40, had placed a call to Weygandt the night of the homicide stating he was having car trouble and needed help. Weygandt went to his assistance after telling a security guard at the campsite where he was staying that he was going to take Martin to a hotel to avoid trouble at his trailer.
Police said Martin also attempted to establish an alibi placing him elsewhere at the time, and then confessed to killing Weygandt in self-defense after the older man pulled a handgun on him.
Martin is scheduled to appear for his formal arraignment at 9 a.m. Nov. 27 in Westmoreland County Courthouse.
