Former Beaver Co. deputy faces sentencing

PITTSBURGH (AP) – A former Western Pennsylvania sheriff’s deputy is set for sentencing on federal tax evasion charges.
Sixty-three-year-old Thomas Tuka, of Big Beaver, was convicted in January by a federal court jury in Pittsburgh.
Prosecutors say he failed to file tax returns and pay taxes on more than $480,000 worth of disability income he received from 2003 to 2008.
Tuka was suspended from his job as a Beaver County deputy sheriff since his indictment in 2011.
The jury found that Tuka received the disability pay from US Airways and didn’t pay taxes on it. He’s set for sentencing Wednesday before a federal judge in Pittsburgh.
Tuka had claimed the problem was a simple misunderstanding that he hoped to clear up with the Internal Revenue Service.
