WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month during their meeting Thursday.

According to information provided by Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania, the Greene, Fayette and Washington offices last year responded to 1,719 domestic violence-related hotline calls; provided services to 2,173 new victims, children and significant others; gave 592 victims and children 9,185 nights of shelter; and offered 15,091 hours of counseling to all victims, children and significant others.

“The key to stopping domestic violence is to bring abuse out from behind closed doors and into the public eye,” said Cheryl McCready, Greene County satellite office coordinator for Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania. “That’s done through awareness, and telling people domestic violence is not okay and that there’s a place to go for help.”

McCready presented the commissioners with purple bracelets and purple ribbons, the color of domestic violence awareness.
