PITTSBURGH (AP) – A student has been suspended from a western Pennsylvania university because campus police say he was belligerent when they were called to a classroom where he wore makeup that made him look like the Batman villain “The Joker”.

Twenty-one-year-old Carlow University student Christian Smith spent four days in the Allegheny County Jail after campus police charged him with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and other crimes in the Sept. 27 incident.

Smith and his attorney say the student was planning to attend a comic book convention after class, and didn’t mean any harm. But police say Smith accused officers of picking on him because he is black, spit on an officer and later said he wanted to kill police – which Smith flatly denies.

Carlow officials say they’re confident police acted properly.
