UNIONTOWN (AP) – A southwestern Pennsylvania man is accused of beating a 20-month-old child, leaving the toddler hospitalized in critical condition.

The (Uniontown) Herald-Standard reports 35-year-old Raymond Allen Matteson faces charges including aggravated and simple assault after police say he gave several different accounts of how his girlfriend’s son was injured.

Investigators say the child was transported to a Pittsburgh hospital with a lacerated liver and head injuries Friday night. A police affidavit says another man called 911 after seeing Matteson shake the boy then splash him with water in an attempt to revive him.

Matteson was arraigned and tentatively scheduled for a preliminary hearing Tuesday. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
