State police at the Belle Vernon station continue to investigate the shooting death of a Bentleyville man during an altercation with a longtime acquaintance in West Pike Run Township.

Cpl. Matthew Steffy said Wednesday that no decision has been made on whether Joseph Volcheck will be charged in the shooting death of 43-year-old Robert Joseph Watson.

Utility workers found Volcheck lying outside a detached garage in the 300 block of Sunset Drive. Volcheck had a head injury. Watson was still clutching a metal pipe. Volcheck’s family said that Watson reportedly came after Joseph Volcheck with the pipe.

Watson was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the chest following the altercation at the garage near Volcheck’s home.

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco ruled the death a homicide.

Washington County District Attorney Gene Vittone said that once state police complete the investigation, his office will review the case and determine if charges are warranted against Volcheck.

Volcheck was taken to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment of his head injury. A hospital spokeswoman said he is no longer listed as a patient Wednesday.
