State and local police are investigating the theft of copper grounding wire from about a half-dozen Range Resource gas well sites in Washington and Greene counties over the last week.

Most recently, a theft was reported Friday to Donegal Township police. Chartiers Township police were notified Tuesday of a theft at a site off Johnson Hill Road.

“The thefts seem to be spread out,” said Matt Pitzarella, company spokesman. “I know of five incidents, and they are not all in one place.”

The company already uses security cameras and motion detectors. Pitzarella said it also will increase field security.

The company is not alone in being a victim of the thefts, Pitzarella said, noting that cellphone towers and power stations also have been hit.
