PITTSBURGH (AP) – The president of the Heinz Endowments plans to retire, though no date has been announced.

Robert Vagt has headed the charity since 2008, and he announced the decision in a Monday statement to staff, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (http://bit.ly/GXZbTp ) reports.

The 66-year-old Vagt played a key role in the formation earlier this year of the Center for Sustainable Shale Development, a coalition of foundations, environmental groups and natural gas drillers. But other leading environmental groups criticized the effort, and two key Heinz employees were fired in August.

It’s unclear what role, if any, the recent medical problems of Teresa Heinz Kerry may have played in the changes. Heinz Kerry, 74, is the head of the endowments.

Vagt is also a former president of Davidson College in North Carolina.
