An Avella man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital Tuesday after wrecking his motorcycle in Cross Creek Township.

Edward Patrick Hayes, 59, lost control of his motorcycle while driving east on Avella Road about noon, but state police do not believe speeding was the cause. Police said Hayes drove off the road and traveled about 100 feet before hitting several small trees and stopping in a ditch.

Hayes was not wearing a helmet and was taken to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital for head injuries. A hospital spokesperson said he is in stable condition Tuesday night.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. Avella firefighters and emergency medical service workers assisted.
