Gov. Tom Corbett has named Holly J. Martin, of North Strabane Township, to the state Board of Psychology.

Martin, 52, is chief operating officer at Greenbriar Treatment Center, where she was also staff psychologist. She has a master of arts degree in counseling psychology from Slippery Rock University and she has been a licensed psychologist since 1988.

“I hope a large focus of the board is mental health treatment,” Martin said. “Some plans don’t offer mental health care or care for substance abuse. I want to be sure everyone has the ability to have mental health care.”

Greenbriar Treatment Center, a subsidiary of Washington Health System, broke ground last month for a 7,700-square-foot ranch-style building to be used for detoxifying 14 patients. When it is completed, Greenbriar will be able to treat 72 patients at the Manor Drive site. In Washington County, Greenbriar also has two halfway houses, one in North Strabane Township and the other in Canton Township, plus an outpatient facility in North Strabane. It also has facilities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.

Martin’s nomination, which was confirmed by the state Senate, is a four-year appointment. Six psychologists, two public members and one commissioner make up the board, which is one of 29 in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of State provides boards and commissions with legal, technical and administrative support to conduct written practical licensure exams, review and verify education and experience of candidates seeking licensure, certify providers of education, receive and investigate public complaints, conduct periodic facility inspections, sanction violators, revise standards for licensing to keep pace with changes in the professions and advise the legislature on proposed changes in laws.
