Pa. officer suspended amid probe of athletic funds

HARRISBURG (AP) – A central Pennsylvania police officer has been suspended as officials probe alleged financial irregularities in the department’s athletic league.
The Harrisburg officer turned in her badge and weapon on Friday. She says she’s innocent and looks forward to clearing her name.
The Associated Press is not naming the officer because she hasn’t been charged with a crime.
City spokesman Robert Philbin says funding discrepancies with the Police Athletic League became apparent when Harrisburg’s new chief began restructuring the department.
Philbin, who is also the city’s chief operating officer, could not say how much money is involved. The athletic league’s attorney was not immediately available for comment.
City Councilwoman Eugenia Smith says the problems might simply stem from improper record-keeping.
