Valerie Farquharson can’t remember how long she has been sending in checks to 2000 Turkeys.

But every year, when the campaign kicks off, the North Strabane Township resident writes out a check and puts it in the mailbox.

“I like to give because I’ve been fortunate and I like to pay that back,” said Farquharson. “I am aware that there is a big need in Washington County.”

With the help of generous people in the community like Farquharson, 2000 Turkeys has supplied Thanskgiving dinners for Washington County families in need for 30 years. Every $15 donation provides a turkey and fixings for a family of four. This year’s goal is to raise $100,000 to provide a holiday meal for more than 5,000 families who meet eligibility requirements established by the Greater Washington County Food Bank.

Heading into the third week of the campaign, 2000 Turkeys has raised $9,925.

Businesses and organizations interested in obtaining a coin jar to raise money for 2000 Turkeys can call Canonsburg Mayor David Rhome at 724-745-1800, and Shop ‘n Save stores in Canonsburg and Washington will again offer $1 turkey placards.

Farquharson said she donates to other organizations, but likes 2000 Turkeys because it’s a local charity.

“I like it because it’s close to home,” said Farquharson.

If you’d like to make a donation, make a check payable to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, PA 15301.
