An Ohio man was seriously injured Monday when he apparently pulled from a parking lot into the path of a truck going south on Route 18 about three miles north of Bavington Road in Smith Township.

Police Chief Bernie LaRue said 21-year-old Ryan Lee Masters pulled from the lot at C & K Industries, where he had been working for about six months and was hit broadside by the rig driven by James Schomer, 33 of Herminie, Westmoreland County. Schomer was driving for Coyle Trucking of Eighty Four.

The impact knocked Masters’ car into the northbound lane. Masters had to be freed from the wreckage by Slovan firefighters.

Masters, who was responsive to emergency crews, was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday he was not included on the patient list.

Schomer was not injured but taken for routine chemical testing.

LaRue said the crash is still under investigation. The chief said the truck passed an inspection Tuesday and that Schomer appeared to be driving within the speed limit.
