CANONSBURG – Canon-McMillan School Board unanimously approved a new three-year contract with the district teachers union Monday.

The agreement, which was previously approved by the Canon-McMillan Education Association, calls for a salary increase of about 3.48 percent over three years.

For the first year of the contract, health care benefits will remain unchanged from the final year of the previous contract.

The school district and the teachers union are establishing a health care task force comprised of members of the CMEA, school board and administration to analyze the current health care provisions and to explore options for obtaining that health care at a reduced rate.

The teachers union and the school district will split the savings, if there are any, in the second and third year of the contract, according to Superintendent Michael Daniels. Both sides will obtain a consultant to help throughout the process.

The contract is retroactive to Aug. 16, when the previous deal expired, and runs through the 2015-16 academic year.

Under the contract, the lowest paid teacher in the district will receive $41,300 in the first year and $42,500 in the final year. When the contract expires, the ceiling for a teacher at Canon-McMillan will be $83,550.

High school teachers also will have one additional instructional period each day. Teachers will teach six classes and will have one prep period and one duty period.

Details of the contract were provided by Daniels on Wednesday, two days after the agreement was ratified at Monday’s meeting.

Daniels did not have financial details at the meeting, and Canon-McMillan’s business manager could not be reached by telelphone for financial details of the contract Tuesday.

Daniels and CMEA president Lori Freeze both were pleased with the agreement.

“We are happy that the CMEA contract has been ratified. It has been a process where the factions have, once again, come together to achieve positive resolve,” said Daniels, who noted the two sides negotiated the contract almost entirely without legal counsel or other non-district representatives present.

The CMEA represents 328 teachers and professionals in the district.

The school board also reached an agreement with the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ, which represents school bus drivers, custodians, and maintenance and cafeteria workers.
