DONORA – Costly upgrades to the Donora sewer system, as well as the one in neighboring Monessen, will result in a sharp increase in customer bills to Mon Valley Sewage Authority.
The bills are set to increase by 29.5 percent in January for the authority’s 2,000 customers in Donora, said Tom Salak, the authority’s general manager.
He said the upcoming closing of the PolyOne plant in Donora also will cost the authority $300,000 a year. Customers can expect another rate hike late next year or in early 2015.
The authority’s quarterly minimum charge will increase from $88 to $114, Salak said.
He said the authority is under a 2008 state Department of Environmental Protection mandate to spend $43 million to make upgrades to eliminate the discharge of untreated sewage into the Monongahela River during heavy rainfall.
The 12-year upgrade will be completed in three phases.
The authority just finished upgrading pump stations and constructing a 3 million gallon storage tank to accommodate the overruns, Salak said.
