The 35th Annual Homecoming Christmas Craft Show, which will be held at the Greene Academy of Art in Carmichaels, was the topic of discussion at the last meeting of academy board of directors.
The annual Christmas craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov.10. Seventeen members attended the meeting.
Kathy Kerr, chairman of the craft show, reported that in addition to our quality crafters and artisans this year, Joyce’s Copper Kettle Fudge will be available. Santa also will walk around with cookies for all and each person will be given three free tickets for a drawing for five prizes in a Chinese auction.
Hot food will be available and there is free admission and parking at Laurel Point Cemetery. People also will be invited to view the Nemacolin quilt, which has not seen in more ten years, the academy album with historic pictures and clippings and artist Dave Lesako’s rendition of the centuries old building.
Christmas music will be performed both days by local students. Kerr also indicated that a flyer will be mailed by the publicity committee at the end of October.
During the building and grounds committee reports, it was noted that board members painted the door frames, the side porch, several benches and the shed prior to the Covered Bridge Festival. A meeting will be called at a later date to complete additional work on the shed.
During the Covered Bridge Festival committee report, Alan and Dorothy Vozel thanked everyone for their help at the Covered Bridge Festival. They especially wanted to thank the National Honor Society and Boy Scouts for their hard work. The board commended the Vozels for their never-ending work all year to make the festival a success and it was in spite of the heavy rainfall Saturday.
During the historic committee report, a schedule of fees for the 1874-1875 school year at the academy was located and a copy circulated to the board. The spring term cost was $6 for academic; $4.50 for intermediate and $3 for Primary, April 13, 1874 to July 2, 1874. The student boarding information was particularly interesting: “Boarding in private homes in town, and at a convenient distance in the country, at from $2.50 to $3 per week.” The academy board assumes this amount included meals.
Bob English said that the piano tuner will tune the academy’s baby grand on Wednesday afternoon.
If possible, board members should come to the academy on Friday, Nov. 1, at 3 pm to decorate the academy prior to the Christmas Craft Show. Tall people who can climb are especially needed.
The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26.
