ROGERSVILLE – Heat has been restored to areas of the West Greene Middle-Senior High School that were being heated by space heaters late last week and early Monday morning. The heat issue was addressed at the school board meeting on Thursday evening. At that time, District Superintendent Thelma Szarell said some minor work was still needed to allow heat to these parts of the building. Szarell said the contractor on that part of the junior-senior high school renovation project said the work would be completed the following week.
A day after the board meeting Oct. 25, Szarell decided to call for an early dismissal because she said she felt the conditions were too cold for the students. Szarell said the classrooms where the heat was not working had been supplied with space heaters but she still decided to call for the early dismissal. School resumed at its usual time Monday with larger space heaters in place.
“I was keeping an eye on the weather and expected it to be a little warmer this morning than it turned out to be,” Szarell said by phone Monday afternoon. “The heat is back on as of about noon.”
Szarell said the district purchased some larger space heaters over the weekend just in case the heat was not back on when students came in on Monday. She said she knew the circumstances were less than ideal but everything is back in order.
“The heat would have been on a little sooner today (Monday) but we had to wait for the contractor to be able to turn it back on,” she said.
