DEP sues companies over Westmoreland County scrap site

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has sued three companies for $2.3 million in cleanup costs at a western Pennsylvania scrap site.
The DEP says lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and polychlorinated biphenyls — also known as PCBs — leaked into the ground from batteries, electrical transformers and other scrapped products at the former Everglade Iron and Steel Co. site. That’s in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County, about 25 miles east of Pittsburgh.
The DEP says CBS Corp., TDY Industries of Pittsburgh, and Timken Co. of Canton, Ohio stored items there from 1940 and 1970 and should share in the remaining cleanup costs. The site’s current owner has already paid $300,000.
A CBS spokeswoman says the company is trying to settle with the DEP, but disputes its alleged share of responsibility. The other two companies declined comment.
