Festival seeks turkey callers

The third annual Outdoor Heritage Festival, an event sponsored by Ryerson Station State Park and the Friends of Ryerson Station, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at the park.

It kicks off at 10 a.m. with the traditional flag raising ceremony. The highlight of the event will be the Warrior Trail Gobblers sanctioned turkey calling contest.

The contest has a $1,000 payout. Signups begin at 11 a.m. with the contest following at 1 p.m. The contact for the event is Guy Rhostutler, who can be reached at 724-350-1062.

At 11 a.m. Wild World of Animals of Eighty Four will present its wildlife educational show. The WWA has over eighty-five animals including: big cats, wolves, other large carnivores, primates, birds of prey, parrots, venomous and non-venomous snakes, crocodilians and other various reptiles, small mammals and amphibians. It has been voted as “one of the top five edutainment shows in the world by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.

At 2 p.m. a trapping demonstration will take place. Archery demonstrations, educational programs, a local reenactment group, and an opportunity to learn about Alpacas will also be part of the event.

Those who wish to have their big buck scored can meet with official scorers from the Pope and Young Club. Pope and Young is one of North America’s leading bowhunting and conservation organizations. The Club records scientific data on North American big game taken with bow and arrow. It conducts ongoing recording periods and every two years presents appropriate recognition to the finest specimens submitted.

Chicken barbecue and other foods will be available at the event, along with children’s activities and a variety of vendors.

The festival is sponsored by the Friends of Ryerson Station State Park, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
