Woodland Owners hosts event

Southwestern Pennsylvania Woodland Owners is hosting two workshops that may be of interest to local landowners. The first will be held on Sept. 11, and the topic of the informational meeting is “Landowner Liability.”

Ross Pifer from Penn State Agricultural Law Resources and Reference Center, part of Penn State Extension Services, will be the speaker. His talk will focus on the legal issues important to landowners. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and will be in the basement meeting room at the Concord Presbyterian Church, 155 Old Concord Road, Prosperity, Washington County, off Route 18, south of Prosperity). This meeting is free and open to the public.

On Sept. 14, SPWO will host a “Skills Day in the Woods” which will feature talks and demonstrations on chainsaw safety, directional log felling, log grading, bucking and moving logs. Use of an Alaska mill to saw boards will be demonstrated.

The workshop will be held at the Perkey Tree Farm in Greene County. Those who plan to attend should meet at the Greene County Fairgrounds, at the west parking lot of Building No. 10 at 12:30 p.m. to carpool or caravan to this farm.

This event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Those who attend should dress appropriately for the weather, wear proper shoes for hiking through brush and bring water. This event is also free and open to the public.

SPWO,, a not for profit association, is an organization of individuals interested in sound woodland management practices which encourage the diverse use of forests for timber production, wildlife habitat, watershed protection and recreation and to promote this multiple-use philosophy through education and technical assistance for the benefit of the membership and general public.
