The Washington County Historical Society is celebrating its 20th anniversary of “Art in the Garden” with a 1920s-themed gala and art show fundraiser this weekend.

Historical Society Executive Director Clay Kilgore was ecstatic as guests filtered into the kickoff event at the LeMoyne House garden wearing “flapper” dresses or suits that looked to be straight out of the Gatsby collection.

“We were really curious how many people would dress up,” Kilgore said as two women wearing flappers rounded the corner and walked to the garden. “Here comes some more flappers now.”

Layton Wise and his wife, Barbara, arrived in style in a 1929 Ford Model A Roadster that quickly because a focal point for guests who posed for photos.

The group was hoping to raise $20,000 during the two-day event that Kilgore thinks has become a “staple in Washington County culture” over the past 20 years. Saturday night’s ’20s-themed gala with music and food was a celebration before this afternoon’s art show and sale.

“Whether you’re an art lover or you just want something to do on a Sunday, you’re going to be entertained,” Kilgore said. “We’re really happy with everything so far. I can’t complain at all.”

Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $20 for today’s event that runs from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be food, wine and music, and parents can enjoy “adult time” by dropping their children off in the kids’ zone located at the garden.
