Ohio college launches fire safety initiative

CINCINNATI (AP) – The University of Cincinnati is focusing on fire safety in events Monday as part an initiative in the aftermath of two student deaths in an off-campus blaze.
The school says the public is invited to viewings of the documentary “After The Fire,” about the impact of a deadly fire at Seton Hall University in 2000. It focuses on the lives of two badly burned survivors.
The school also has invited Alvaro Llanos and Shawn Simons, the Seton Hall survivors in the documentary, to take part in the program.
The 2012 documentary directed by Guido Verweyen depicts the January 2000 fire in a dormitory that killed three students and injured many more in South Orange, N.J.
“We anticipate drawing a large attendance for this event,” Daniel Cummins, UC assistant dean of students, said in a statement. “Our effort to raise fire safety awareness among faculty, staff and students, whether on or off campus, has generated a great deal of interest.”
UC’s Safe Housing task force is hosting the programs.
Students Ellen Garner and Chad Kohls were killed Jan. 1 in an off-campus fire. The city of Cincinnati has launched a safe student housing program that lists rental properties that have passed city fire inspections.
Family members of the two students killed will speak during the programs. The school says there will be sessions at 3 and 8 p.m. EDT.
