A Charleroi man was charged with theft Monday for allegedly stealing the car owned by the borough’s mayor from outside a coin-operated laundry last week.
Frank Green, 46, of 601 McKean Ave., was charged by Charleroi Regional police with stealing the 2006 Ford Focus owned by Mayor Nancy Ellis Wednesday afternoon. The charge was filed at the office of District Judge Larry Hopkins.
Police were called to Charleroi Laundry, 301 First St., Ellis told police she keft the keys in the vehicle, went inside the laundromat and when she came back out it was gone. Green was stopped later that day after he was spotted by state police driving the car on Interstate 70 near Bentleyville. Police said he also had items in the vehicle that may have been stolen from stores in the Washington area.
Green has a hearing on the state police charges of receiving stolen property and driving without a license on Sept. 19 before District Judge Curtis Thompson. A hearing now will be scheduled on the theft charge before Hopkins. Green remains in Washington County jail on $5,000 bond.
