WAYNESBURG – Beginning later this month, the Greene County Department of Recreation will offer five sessions of fitness classes, including the addition of two brand-new programs to the fall fitness schedule.

All classes begin the week of Sept. 23 and include morning and evening sessions of Zumba and evening sessions of aerobics and the two newest classes, Bokwa fitness and hatha yoga. Individual classes can be attended at a cost of $8 per class, but pre-registration discounts are available.

Yoga classes will be held at Mon View Roller Rink and Community Center in Greensboro, and all other classes will be held in the 4-H Building at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg.

Attendees should wear sweat-absorbing clothes and good support shoes and bring water and towels.

Beginning Sept. 23, morning Zumba will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through Nov. 1.

An early registration discount is $5 per class, for a total of $90, and the deadline is Friday, Sept. 20.

Instructor Melissa Frameli will lead the classes.

The fitness program Zumba combines Latin and international music with dynamic, yet simple exercise moves.

Benefits of Zumba include efficient calorie-burning, muscle toning and cardiovascular improvement.

Frameli will also instruct the brand-new Bokwa fitness classes, which will begin Sept. 24 and run from 6 to 7 p.m. every Tuesday through Oct. 29.

An early registration discount is $5 per class, for a total of $30, and the deadline is Monday, Sept. 23.

Bokwa is a newer style of group exercise with no choreography or step-counting. Participants draw letters and numbers with their feet while performing a cardio workout routine to music in a free-form rhythm.

From 6 to 7 p.m. every Wednesday from Sept. 25 through Oct. 30, instructor Shastina Humble will lead aerobicsclasses.

An early registration discount is $5 per class, for a total of $30, and the deadline is Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The aerobics classes are designed for both high- and low-intensity workouts. Aerobic exercise conditions the heart and lungs; other benefits include increased energy and stamina, toned muscles, decreased tension and improved mood.

The second new class, hatha yoga, will begin Thursday, Sept. 26. Classes will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday through Nov. 14 with instructor Virginia Wainwright. The pre-registration discount is $5 per class, for a total of $40, and the deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Hatha yoga is a more gentle style of yoga exercise that is great for beginners and senior citizens. It improves balance and overall health, while increasing flexibility and circulation.

Attendees should also bring yoga mats, and shoes will not be worn during the class.

Finally, evening Zumba sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. every Thursday from Sept. 26 through Oct. 31.

An early registration discount is $5 per class, for a total of $30, and the deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 25. Classes will be led by Humble.
