Thousands lose power in NE Pa. storm

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) – Thousands of customers have lost power and one person was struck by lightning as powerful thunderstorms move through the Scranton area.

PPL Electric Utilities says more than 2,000 homes in Lackawanna County were without power Wednesday afternoon.

The Times-Tribune reports that a person was hit by lightning around 4:15 p.m. in Scranton. Lackawanna County dispatchers tell the paper that emergency personnel are tending to the victim.

Downed trees and power lines were reported throughout the county.

The National Weather Service said a storm capable of producing quarter-size hail and winds in excess of 60 mph was moving through southern Wayne and northern Lackawanna counties.

The weather service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Bradford, Susquehanna, Wayne, Wyoming, Lackawanna, Luzerne and Pike counties through 9 p.m.
