Wellness programs planned at hospital

WAYNESBURG – This fall, Waynesburg University students will conduct health and wellness education in the second-floor lobby of Southwest Regional Medical Center.
This free health education is being offered to provide valuable health education and information to community members and employees of the hospital. The education will focus on prevalent health conditions such as heart health, lung health and healthy eating.
The dates, topics and students in charge are as follows:
• Oct. 7 – Go RED campaign for heart disease, Lauren Stough and Brittany Bianchin
• Oct. 14 – Heart healthy nutrition, Chaelyn Cross, Megan Weinstock and Erin Pierson
• Oct. 18 – Breast cancer awareness, Kaitlin Oliver and Jaimie White
• Oct. 21 – Breast cancer awareness, Katy Jo Kramer and Katelyn Blaich
• Oct. 25 – Pulmonary/ pneumonia/chroinic lung/inhalers use, Larissa Matzus and Mary Chory
• Nov. 1 – Obesity (adult and childhood), Megan Erickson and Shayla Mitrik
• Nov. 8 – Diabetes, Devon Longo and Rebekah Jardine
• Nov. 15 – Great Asmerican Smokeout, Olivia Knowlson, Annie Carter, Derrick Connor, Sarah Homulka and Ashley Naylor
• Nov. 18 – Smoking cessation and smokeless tobacco nicotine replacements, Michael Campbell and Amber Snyder
• Nov. 22 – Holidays: Depression and mood disorders, Myriah Cox and Maria Walsh
Students will be available from 8:30 a.m. until noon on each of the days noted. They will be in the second-floor lobby.
The students are seniors enrolled in clinical prevention and population health taught by Melany D. Chrash.
“The purpose of the program is to help students put their knowledge to use in proactive ways so they can better understand the importance of education and prevention,” said Chrash.
Each week will have a particular focus and set of students to present the information. They will have educational displays, information and be available to answer questions. Anyone wishing to stop by and talk with them can do so during the noted times.
