A California man told Washington police that he was robbed at gunpoint Sunday night after he stopped to check out a burned-out headlight on his vehicle.

Shawn Ranieri, 36, told police he stopped about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Beech Street and Buttonwood Avenue to check the headlight.

After he got out, he said he was approached by a white man with blond hair, a scruffy beard and wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt.

The robber pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Ranieri.

He took Ranieri’s cellphone and wallet before running south in the 700 block of Beech.

Ranieri told police he drove to Washington Hospital to get help.

Police later found his cellphone, bank card and driver’s license on a nearby street.

The wallet and the money inside were not found.
