State Rep. Pete Daley is organizing a public hearing to discuss the planned shutdown of two coal-fired power plants in the Mon Valley.

Daley, D-California, scheduled the hearing for 1 p.m. Oct. 3 at at the Monongahela Fire Company hall and said officials from FirstEnergy Corp., PJM Interconnection and the state Public Utility Commission are expected to testify.

FirstEnergy announced in July it plans to deactivate the Mitchell Power Station in Union Township and Hatfield’s Ferry Power Station near Carmichaels Oct. 9. The closure of the two power plants would result in the loss of 380 jobs.

Daley, who is the minority chairman on the House Consumer Affairs committee, said the decision to deactivate the plants hinges on a reliability review by PJM Interconnection.

The fire hall is located at 451 W. Main St. in Monongahela.
