A truck driver faces almost $9,000 in fines after state police said they found numerous violations with not only his rig but his status as a driver during a safety check last week at the Claysville rest area off Interstate 70 in Donegal Township.

State police said Marcel Bud, 40, of Taylor, Mich., was driving with a suspended commercial license.

Trooper Frank Lewis, who issued 34 citations to Bud, said the rig is what police refer to as a “family killer,” adding that it was an accident waiting to happen. Although the Michigan man was driving for a trucking company out of California, Lewis said Bud owns the trailer and is responsible for it. The total in fines on the 34 citations is $8,697.

Lewis said records indicate that Bud was cited for some of the same violations earlier this year in New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. Some of the new citations deal with his alleged failure to correct defects found in the prior inspections.

In addition to driving with a suspended license, Bud was cited for having an inoperable turn signal, having an inoperable high beam, cracked rim on a wheel, having brakes out of adjustment, an oil leak, having inadequate brakes and bald tires. His log book also was not current, police said.

Bud was hauling a load of lettuce from California to New York when his rig was taken out of service.

The truck was towed to the nearby Petro Truck Stop and secured in a building until repairs are made.

The charges were filed Friday at the office of District Judge Ethan Ward.
