Columbus police HQ evacuated after explosion call

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A report of an explosion triggered the evacuation of the Columbus Police Department headquarters Tuesday night, but firefighters in Ohio’s capital said there was no visual evidence of such a blast.
Fire Battalion Chief Patrick Ferguson said the cause of what a caller reported as an explosion at about 7:30 p.m. was not determined. No injuries were reported.
Ferguson said there were no signs of smoke following the loud noise that prompted the emergency call.
Several emergency responders were dispatched to the scene in downtown Columbus. The building is located in a business district, a few blocks from the Ohio Statehouse.
The Columbus Dispatch reported a stretch of the street where the police headquarters is located was blocked following the incident.
A police public information officer did not immediately return phone messages.
The police department’s non-emergency and 911 lines were not affected.
A police dispatcher said the department did not receive any threats in connection with the incident.
