WAYNESBURG – The Rev. Carolyn Poteet has joined Waynesburg University as the director of faith and mission, the university announced Monday.

In her role, she will serve as a member of the senior administrative team with the goal of fostering the spiritual formation in the university community.

“I am pleased to welcome the Rev. Poteet to the Waynesburg University community,” said university President Douglas G. Lee. “The faith and energy that she brings to this position will undoubtedly advance the university’s Christian mission.”

In her role as the director of faith and mission at the university, Poteet will direct the Campus Ministry Program, develop programs consistent with the university’s mission of faith, learning and service, direct chapel services and provide mentoring and leadership for mission trips.

“Most of my life has been dedicated to a life of faith, service and learning, and I am excited to explore with Waynesburg University how we can accomplish that mission together,” Poteet said.

From 1991 to 1998, Poteet worked for World Vision, an international, Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. Working from Vienna, Austria, she developed and managed grant-funded programming in the eight countries of the Middle East/Eastern Europe Region as World Vision’s international program development officer. Poteet acquired more than $19 million in funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development, World Food Program, UNHCR and UNICEF through her grant-proposals.

Prior to joining Waynesburg University, Poteet served as the associate pastor and minister for Christian education and young families at the First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, N.C., where she provided pastoral care, regular preaching, wrote and led Bible studies and helped start prayer ministries and new contemporary service.

Poteet also participated in the Presbyterian Renewal Network, helping to start a grassroots training group for evangelical commissioners. She served as a member of WNC Presbytery Committee for Preparation for Ministry for six years, as well as on the board of directors for Theology Matters journal since 2009, Open Arms Crisis Pregnancy Center since 2008 and Creative Beginnings Christian Preschool since 2007.

Previously, Poteet served as the Christian education director at the Outer Banks Presbyterian Church in Kill Devils Hill, N.C., where she led the Christian education, children’s ministry and youth ministry programs.

Poteet holds a bachelor of arts degree and a master of divinity from Duke University.
