WAYNESBURG – Jon Marshall, a mission adventure team leader at Campamento del Caribe in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, recently visited Waynesburg University to discuss future service opportunities within CDC for university students.

Marshall, who was on campus Sept. 16-19, was inspired to visit Waynesburg with the goal of developing the relationship between his organization and the university because of the impact he has witnessed university students make at CDC.

Athletic training students, staff and faculty served on mission trips at CDC in Juana Diaz, Puerto Rico, in December 2010 and December 2012. The impact of the team was made evident by the rapid growth of community involvement with CDC during the week the team served there. The students hosted a soccer clinic and injury prevention training, trained parents on correct wrapping techniques and used a common love of sports to overcome the language barrier.

“Sports are huge in Puerto Rico,” Marshall said, “and the Waynesburg students are the experts on how to do it safely. They were offering valuable advice and information to the locals, and so by the end of the week, as the word spread, we had three times the amount of people attending.”

During his visit, Marshall spoke to various classes on the importance of short-term mission trips in relation to both the value of cross-cultural experiences as well as impact. Marshall also explored with faculty and staff the ways in which the relationship between Waynesburg University and CDC can be developed.

“We can continue enabling students to utilize their gifts and skills,” Marshall said. “Athletic training, business, science, information technology, whatever their major, we have a project for them.”

“Puerto Rico is a diverse place,” he said. “The need is there, it’s just a matter of organizing the projects and matching the people with the skills with those projects. That is what I can do.”

CDC is a Christian ministry that hosts summer youth camps and other events throughout the year. The organization also partners with schools, churches, businesses and other organizations to host retreats for groups of all sizes.
