University students to assist with home repairs at Pittsburgh Project

WAYNESBURG – Twenty-one Waynesburg University students will travel to Pittsburgh Oct. 5 to assist with ongoing home repairs managed by the Pittsburgh Project.

The team is composed of students from both a service learning class led by Dave Calvario, dean of students and director of the center for service leadership, and an urban history course led by Ezekial Olagoke, assistant professor of sociology. Students will assist with working on homes for the elderly or individuals on a fixed income who are not able to perform general upkeep on their property.

The Pittsburgh Project is a Christian Community Development Organization dedicated to developing and strengthening servant leaders while also upholding the dignity of vulnerable homeowners.

“Through the Pittsburgh Project, homeowners served are able to remain in their homes and feel good about the condition of where they are living,” Calvario said.

Students attending are Emily Bosworth, a senior from Waynesburg; Rachel Brown, a sophomore from Pittsburgh; Jackie Collius, a senior from Penndel; Devin Coughlin, a junior from Belvidere, N.J.; Alex Crow, a senior from Carlisle; McKee Dixon, a senior from Moon Township; Cassy Dowler, a senior from Latrobe; Andrya Durr, a from Greensboro; Samantha Ervin, a senior from Irwin; Tiffany Franck, a senior from Ephrata; and Cody Hillberry, a junior from Sycamore.

Also, Dave Houseman, a senior from Jacobs Creek; Briana Hozak, a senior from Home; Mary Krepp, a junior from Pittsburgh; Brendan Omicioli, a senior from Gowanda, N.Y.; Brittany Orndoff, a junior from Waynesburg; Austin Orth, a sophomore major from Meyersdale; Madison Perretta, a sophomore from Beaver Falls; Rachel Red-Horse, a sophomore major from Sacramento, Calif.; Gracious Shavers, a junior from Ginowan City, Japan; and Alex Tenenbaum, a junior from Pittsburgh.
