Plans for gas pipeline scrapped

LANCASTER (AP) – Plans for construction of a natural gas pipeline from southeastern Pennsylvania into Maryland and passing through southern Lancaster County have been abandoned.
The (Lancaster) Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era said the 88-mile Mid-Atlantic Express pipeline would have carried gas from Eagle to a Baltimore terminal, where it was to be liquefied for transport overseas.
The pipeline was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in 2009. But last week, AES Corp. of Arlington, Va., filed a motion with the commission to vacate the approval.
The company said “To date, no construction activities have been undertaken.”
The project had been opposed by some residents and conservancy groups and faced court appeals and opposition from some Maryland officials.
