WCCF to hold nonprofit governance seminar

The Washington County Community Foundation’s Building Charitable Capacity Learning Institute will host a nonprofit board governance seminar from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Western Area Career and Technology Center.

This seminar, designed for executive staff and board members, will cover the basics of nonprofit board governance, with a focus on transparency. There is no fee to attend, but registration is requited. The registration form is available on the “Events” section of www.wccf.net.

The keynote speaker will be attorney Don W. Kramer the chair of the Nonprofit Law Group at the Philadelphia law firm of Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads LLP. Kramer has more than 35 years of experience dealing with the concerns of nonprofit organizations, not only as a lawyer, but also as a teacher, writer, publisher and board member.

He is the editor and publisher of Don Kramer’s Nonprofit Issues®, a national newsletter of “Nonprofit Law You Need to Know.” He writes and lectures frequently on nonprofit legal issues and teaches a course on nonprofit organization law at the University of Pennsylvania. Kramer has worked with nonprofit organizations of all types and sizes, helping structure start-up situations and restructure multi-organizational foundations, health and educational systems.

He counsels on a wide range of corporate, governance, tax, real estate, charitable giving, and other nonprofit issues. A graduate of Princeton University, he earned a law degree from Harvard Law School. He served as deputy development coordinator and assistant to the mayor of Philadelphia before joining Montgomery, McCracken in 1972.

The Building Charitable Capacity Learning Institute, an initiative of the WCCF, is a continual series of training sessions designed to assist local charities in meeting the charitable sector’s highest level of standards, accountability, and transparency.
