Pittsburgh garbage trucks must make extra trips

PITTSBURGH (AP) – A state crackdown on overweight trucks has prompted the city of Pittsburgh officials to require its garbage trucks to make extra trips to landfills.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that state police and the Department of Environmental Protection found some trucks exceeded the weight limit of 58,400 pounds and warned that citations would be issued in the future.
City officials responded by requiring all trash trucks to go to a landfill halfway through their routes instead of waiting until they finished the entire route.
A Teamsters union official, Joseph Rossi, objects to the policy. He said the extra trips waste fuel and penalize crews who work hard to finish their routes so they can knock off early.
City officials said they may revise the policy, but for now it stands.
