WAYNESBURG – Community Foundation of Greene County will present “The Keys to Handling Sudden Wealth” from 7 to 9 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Pennsylvania National Guard Readiness Center, 500 EverGreene Drive, Waynesburg.
It is a free seminar but pre-registration is required by Friday.
Presenting the program will be David Rust and Shane Moore of the Sudden Wealth Center in Austin, Texas, and much of what they will address is contained in their best-selling book, “Sudden Wealth: Blessing or Burden?”
Betty Stammerjohn, executive director of the Community Foundation of Greene County, said the seminar is for “anyone who may experience new wealth from the gas industry, lottery, inheritance, insurance, etc., as well as those who work with individuals and families who experience sudden wealth.”
A story earlier this year in The Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre, addressed the infusion of money landowners were receiving as a result of gas drilling. The story began:
“Thanks to the shale industry, the local area is booming like never before. People are excited. People are signing leases with oil and gas companies for thousands of dollars an acre. People with 40 or 50 acres of land are making several hundred thousand dollars. Landowners leasing a few hundred acres of land are now millionaires and if predictions are correct about the abundance of resources in these areas once drilling starts, these numbers pale in comparison to the money that’s yet to come.
“Many people dream of one day receiving a big windfall of money. They fantasize about paying off debt, buying new homes and cars and traveling the world. This dream is becoming reality for many, and until now, not many know what it feels like to get this kind of money. How will it affect you, your family? Your relationships? Your community?”
Those questions will be answered by the two authors at the event Oct. 8. As the co-founders of Quartz Financial, a firm that specializes in Sudden Wealth cases, Rust and Moore will lead a discussion regarding the most common challenges sudden wealth recipients face and the solutions to overcoming those challenges.
The Community Foundation of Greene County will provide a complimentary copy of “Sudden Wealth … Blessing or Burden” to each attendee.
As Stammerjohn noted, “Sudden wealth is happening across the country and in our community and there will be new challenges with this new wealth.”
