As an incentive to recruit workers for local election boards, those who devote their time for the good of the electorate don’t have to pay income tax on their earnings. The Washington County elections office asks those who are willing to sign up to work on May 20, the spring primary, to keep that special exception from the Internal Revenue Service in mind.
Here’s a rundown on local boards needing workers:
• Cecil Township 3, one person needed.
• Chartiers Township 2, two people needed.
• Union Township 5, three people needed.
• West Brownsville 2, three people needed.
Chartiers Township’s 4th precinct still needs both a five-person election board and a polling place to replace a private garage that is no longer available. If no one comes forward with a polling place, it’s likely that the Chartiers 4 voters will report to the Palanka Sportsmen’s Club, the home of Chartiers 2.
Although the Washington County elections office has concluded its scheduled training sessions for equipment related to the touch-screen voting machines, Wes Parry, assistant director of elections, said the office is will to offer make-up sessions for individuals or small groups in the elections office conference room.
If no election board members can be found within a precinct, they should reside in the same municipality. Election board members earn about $100 for working a full shift, which lasts from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The person returning voting machines and memory cards to Washington earns an additional $20, plus mileage for the trip from the polling place.
Elections Director Larry Spahr asked those interested in serving on election boards to call him at 724-228-6750.
Some polling places have changed since the last election.
All North Franklin Township voters who go to the polls on election day will be reporting to the Sylvan Drive fire hall. Voters will no longer be using the Cleveland Road fire hall.
Residents of Cecil 2, who in November voted at the Cecil Township fire hall, will now vote at Venice United Presbyterian Church.
Monongahela 2-1, which had been located at the old armory building, will move to Elks Club 455.
Monongahela 3-2, the polling place which was last located at Grace Lutheran Church, will now be at the Monongahela Library.
The last day to register to vote in the May 20 primary is April 21. The last day to apply for a civilian absentee ballot is May 13.
