CHARLEROI – A mugging suspect chose the wrong direction to run from the crime scene early Friday, according to Charleroi police.

Kayleigh Marie Hewitt, 21, of 534 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, ran down an alley that is under police video surveillance behind the local police station as an officer was there filing reports, police said in court records.

The officer, David Kimball, took note of her appearance and attire before heading in her direction about 4:45 a.m., only to be interrupted by a Washington County 911 dispatch to the scene of the mugging, he stated in the affidavit.

The 911 dispatcher described the suspect as a woman wearing the same clothing, including a multicolored, hooded sweatshirt, as the person he had just spotted on surveillance.

He then went to the 600 block of Washington Avenue, where he met the victim, Dona Koon, who said the suspect tripped her, knocked to the ground and fled with her purse containing $36 and a pack of cigarettes.

Koon said she earlier walked out of a Sunoco store at 100 First St. at the same time as the suspect. Koon said the suspect asked her if she was going to walk in the same direction and then accompanied her to the 300 block of Fallowfield Avenue, where the robbery took place, the affidavit states.

Police returned to the Sunoco to view the store’s surveillance video from the time the two women were there, and another officer recognized Hewitt in the images, the affidavit states.

Koon later identified Hewitt from a photo lineup as the woman who robbed her.

Hewitt was located, arrested and charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property, simple assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. She is in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond set Tuesday by District Judge Larry Hopkins.
